The small one should work for you. Worst case, you have to empty it more often.
None of these commercial compost bins are really as big as an ideal compost pile would be. At a minimum, compost piles should be 3′ square, to get enough mass together to heat enough for fast decomposition. Smaller sizes work eventually, but they aren’t going to compost as well, or sterilize the resultant compost, either. The minimum compost size for a 3′ square pile (1 yard) is 27 square feet. That’s probably why most old time gardeners made their own compost containers. It doesn’t have to be much, even a circle of fencing, or some pallets nailed together, etc., it doesn’t take much to keep a compost pile contained, and that’s all you’re really doing.
I have a small garden, that I compost for. I did not buy a fancy expensive composter.(You don’t need to) I took a plastic large garbage can. Cut the bottom off, drill medium sizes holes a 1/3 of the way up on all sides of the can. bury the can in a hole. up past the holes that you drilled.fill the dirt around the can and start adding your compost. put a little potting soil in the can to help it get started. Also take a can coke (NOT DIET) and pour it over your compost 1 time a month.this stimulates decomposition. good luck, and good for you, for helping mother earth
A compost bin is a good idea . most cities won’t pick up your clipping. I found myself loading grass clipping into my truck and taking them to local landfill many times. last spring i decided to make a bin 3 ft high by 4 ft long and 3 feet wide, out of 2 by 4 and 1 by 2 and lined it with chicken wire. i turn the clippings about once a week and it has worked out for me.. good luck
Put on the hinges, then draw the hole. Take the hinges off and cut the door. Now you can put the hinges back on, using the wood scrap inside the barrel, for the screws to bite into. This makes it stronger. It also helps to flip the compost over when you spin the barrel. Wheels are 15″ apart across the middle. The other dimensions will be pretty obvious as you start building. Oh, I almost forgot! I used a 2×6 for the 5th wheel end.
